What if your next member doesn’t search Google for a professional body, trade association or membership organisation?
What if they simply ask ChatGPT?
How Are People Using ChatGPT to Find Professional Support?
People are increasingly using AI to research problems, compare options and ask for recommendations. They might type:
“What professional body should I join in my industry?”
“Where can I find networking opportunities in my field?”
“What’s the best way to improve my professional development?”
And this isn’t a niche behaviour happening on the fringes of search.
ChatGPT now has a huge global audience, with people increasingly using AI tools to research, compare and make decisions.
AI is becoming another place where your future members research their options.
And now, for eligible ChatGPT users in the UK, a relevant sponsored advert can appear beneath the answer.
That creates a completely new opportunity for membership organisations.
What Are ChatGPT Ads?
ChatGPT Ads allow organisations to place relevant sponsored messages alongside conversations happening within ChatGPT.
The important bit is where those adverts appear.
People come to ChatGPT to explore options, compare choices, solve problems and make decisions. Rather than appearing alongside a simple keyword search, an advert can potentially appear in the context of a much more detailed conversation.
At Copper Bay Digital, we’ve been testing ChatGPT Ads as the platform develops in the UK. It’s still early, so we’re certainly not suggesting you move your Google Ads budget across overnight.
But we do think membership organisations should be paying attention.
ChatGPT Ads sit within a much bigger shift in digital discovery. Search behaviour is no longer confined to traditional search engines, which means organisations increasingly need to think about how they can be discovered across search, AI platforms and other digital channels.
You can explore more digital marketing ideas, practical advice and insights for membership organisations in our digital marketing resources.
The Opportunity: Reach Potential Members While They’re Asking the Question
One of the hardest parts of membership recruitment is getting in front of the right person at the right moment.
Traditional paid search works so well because someone is already showing intent.
They search for a qualification. A professional body. Industry support. CPD. Networking opportunities. Career advice.
ChatGPT creates another version of that moment.
Why ChatGPT Could Be Different From Traditional Search
The difference is that instead of typing a short search term, people can describe their situation in much more detail.
Someone might explain that they’ve recently entered an industry and want professional support. Another person might be looking to progress their career, gain a recognised qualification or meet people in the same profession.
Those conversations give AI tools much more context about what the person is actually trying to achieve.
Search is moving from “what keyword did they type?” to “what are they actually trying to achieve?”
For membership marketers, that shift could change how we think about intent.
That potentially creates a very different advertising opportunity: reaching someone while they are actively exploring a problem your organisation may be able to solve.
And that’s where things get interesting for membership organisations.
What Does This Mean for GEO and AI Visibility?
There’s a wider point here too.
If more people are asking AI platforms which organisation to join, which qualification to choose or where to find professional support, being visible in AI-generated answers matters as well as being visible in paid placements.
This is where Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO) comes in.
GEO is about making your organisation’s content clear, useful and authoritative so AI systems can better understand what you do and associate your organisation with relevant topics.
For a membership organisation, that could mean publishing genuinely useful content answering questions such as:
- Who should join your organisation?
- What are the benefits of professional membership?
- What qualifications or CPD opportunities do you offer?
- How can someone progress in your industry?
- Where can professionals find networking or mentoring?
- What standards, guidance or support does your organisation provide?
None of that means abandoning SEO.
It means recognising that discovery is becoming more fragmented. Your potential members might find you through Google, social media, an AI-generated answer, a recommendation or an advert inside an AI conversation.
You can find more practical thinking on SEO, digital strategy, content and emerging technology in the Copper Bay Digital resource library.
Should Membership Organisations Be Using ChatGPT Ads Yet?
Potentially — but we wouldn’t treat them as a replacement for your existing acquisition channels.
Right now, the more useful question is whether ChatGPT Ads could become another way to reach prospective members at a moment when they are actively researching a problem your organisation can solve.
For membership organisations, that could include conversations around professional development, qualifications, career progression, industry support, networking, training and membership itself.
It’s early. There is still plenty to learn about targeting, performance and how people respond to advertising within AI conversations.
But that is exactly why testing now is interesting.
What Have We Learned From Testing ChatGPT Ads?
We recently explored the opportunity in our webinar, Can ChatGPT Ads Find Your Members for You?
We look at where ads appear, how targeting works, what membership organisations need to think about before launching a campaign and what we’ve learned from testing the platform ourselves.
The big takeaway? ChatGPT Ads shouldn’t be viewed as a shiny new replacement for Google Ads.
They’re more interesting than that.
They represent another sign that the way people discover organisations, evaluate their options and make decisions online is changing — and membership marketers need to understand what that change could mean for them.
